La Piel Que Habito

Great film by Almodóvar. La Piel Que Habito has such horrific moments (especially off screen), that the film sometimes feels like a nightmare. But then a stylish and atmospheric nightmare. The direction, the sets, the cinematography, the acting, etc. All in all, it makes for an almost hallucinatory viewing experience.

Elena Anaya is a beautiful actress and knows how to keep your attention, and the same goes for Banderas, Paredes and the other supporting actors. The first part is the strongest, and the last 20 minutes is mainly to round out the story. An inevitable end, because pride, revenge and sadness is a poisonous and doomed cocktail.

The film La Piel Que Habito has become a special film by Almodovar that requires some acceptance and openness from the viewer. Skin grafts and scientific surgical research are central, but what is achieved in the film is now only a utopia. It is not interesting to dwell on whether the film is realistic or not, but it is all the more fascinating to delve into the plot and how it unfolds. The plot development alone, which is slow, revealed layer by layer, is masterful. Almodovar creates a building mysterious tension. Everything eventually falls into place and in terms of genre it balances between an arthouse and a mainstream thriller.

Who is the mysterious stunning woman who lives locked up in the beautiful villa? What are Ledgard's motivations? What role does the past play? The viewer has to exercise patience to untangle the story, but he doesn't make it unnecessarily complicated. Surprising, that's for sure, maybe a bit far-fetched, but certainly not uninteresting. I always had the feeling during the film that Almodovar knew very well what he was doing and where he wanted to go (something that is not always easy for some directors). Cinematographic top as we are used to, beautiful powerful images and an excellent Anaya and Banderas.

The subplot of El Tigre was unnecessary, but the film also makes you think how far ethical biology can go. The body and by extension the face determine the identity of an individual. When will which limit be crossed? Beautiful!

The Bride of Frankenstein

If you're looking for a bizarre movie with a fucked-up story, this Spanish production is the place to be. It can take a while before you as a viewer have completely untangled all the plot lines. The story is easy to follow, but you have to pay close attention at times because you can easily miss certain details that are relevant to understand the motivations of Antonio Banderas' character. Whatever you think of the denouement; far-fetched or unrealistic, this is completely unrelated to the fact that this is an original work.

The more I started to think about it, the more I appreciate the originality. The story is completely unpredictable, contains a lot of suspense and mystery, and also has a lot of depth, while remaining quite easy to follow. Apart from the positives, the far-fetchedness and the fact that the story was sometimes very unrealistic bothered me, but they are irritation points that I take for granted when I look at the overall picture.

4.0*
