A Torinói Ló plot

The film is quite inspired by an episode that marked the end of the career of philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. January 3, 1889, in the Piazza Alberto in Turin, Nietzsche witnesses the beating of a horse. The weeping Nietzsche threw his arms around an exhausted and abused harness horse. After this event, the philosopher never wrote again and descended into madness and silence. But what happened to the horse? From this premise, 'The Horse of Turin', Tarr sets out to explore the lives of the coachman (Krobot), his daughter (Bok) and the horse.

Still a bit of a disappointment. The film contains many beautiful black and white images with nice contrasts, at most a bit too much on the dark side, but I miss a bit of the feeling for subtle camera movements and framing that Tarr's other films have more in my opinion; the camera feels a bit less free.

The surroundings are desolate, and a constant storm seems to be raging. This creates an ominous atmosphere; also thanks to the music, especially the repetitive bass motif. However, the events in the film are minimal. Daily life is followed, how water is fetched from a well, how people get dressed, etc. The first time it can also be captivating, and that is quite impressive, but after the umpteenth time it becomes very heavy. In the end, the film literally and figuratively goes out like a candle. 3*.

Six days in the life of an old farmer [János Ohlsdorfer] and his daughter [Erika Bók] in 1889. The daughter helps her father get dressed, father and daughter go to work, return, eat without cutlery and go to sleep. Every now and then the horse appears, but apart from a neighbour [Mihály Koroms] who comes to give a political sermon, there is nothing to experience for 150 minutes. The story behind the title is considerably more interesting. Even at double playback speed this is barely bearable, despite the sublime black and white photography by Fred Kelemen,

A very depressing film about a father and a mother whose days resemble each other with only a handful of different activities, always meant because it is necessary. The minimum that is still needed to survive. Hopeless and especially empty. And that for 2 and a half hours. You have to like this.

I do like a fair amount of drama, although it was also difficult for me to really enjoy it. It is too slow and melancholic for that. But apart from that, I also cannot ignore the oh so beautiful film adaptation. Because even though the subject is heavy, it is very beautifully captured. Every shot counts, the setting is perfect and the sound is also good. Beautifully dressed, it ensures that this film is much more of a work of art than a film drama (if you know what I mean). Did I enjoy this? Not really. But my appreciation for the beautiful images ensures that this still sticks much more.
