Sheytan Vojud Nadarad plot

'There Is No Evil' is a film divided into four stories; about moral strength, individual freedom taking responsibility for one's actions. In the first story, we follow Heshmat, a middle-aged man who struggles with everyday stressful matters; preparing for his friend's wedding, caring for his mother-in-law, and picking up his child from school. The 2nd segment is about soldier Javad, who is on a short leave of three days. He is on his way to his girlfriend Nana, whom he wants to propose. Pouya struggles to get accepted into the system in the third segment, and in the fourth story, we follow Darya, who overlooks an obvious family secret and protests when she notices her uncle wants to go hunting with her.

A special film of four separate stories with the same theme. Indeed strongly reminiscent of its Argentinian counterpart Relatos Salvajes (Film, 2014). Found the stories very balanced and don't have a clear favorite either. Beautifully shot and well acted. The theme of killing an individual is a strong moral theme.

It takes some getting used to in the beginning because the first story is difficult to indicate the direction and it seems that there is no line in the story. The last scene, on the other hand, is so powerful that it contrasts the mundane from before so sharply.

The second and third stories show why this film is difficult for the Iranian authorities because it is clearly a critical note towards conscription and the legislation on it. Although each story has its own specific criticism of the harsh regime in which executions are still commonplace. Civilians/civil servants and soldiers are just puppets enforcing these laws.

Winner of the Golden Bear, handsome!

There Is No Evil is in fact the title of the first of four stories that make up the film, where each story (or mini-movie) feels very different: the first shows the daily grind in a busy Iranian city, the second the stress of a conscript in a prison, the third an idyllic nature where two lovers reunite and the fourth a desolate wasteland to which 'middle of nowhere' a girl raised in Germany has been sent. The stories are told slowly but all immediately have a certain tension because you do not yet know what is going on and/or it is clear that something terrible is about to happen, with each story taking an unexpected turn. In any case, the dialogues are strong so that it is psychologically fascinating. But above all, despite their diversity, the stories have the same theme (and political message): the (moral) dilemma of the conscript who has to execute a convict or the injustice of the death penalty. Perhaps the message is not that the death penalty is inhumane: after all, it is typically human to kill people you don't even know, rather than in self-defense, because in civilization the law is valued above morality or instinct. These are four good stories that together form a colorful but coherent whole.

The film shows how executions erode a society morally. Great job. All stories bring a new side to the matter, without ever becoming preachy. The last part is the most contemplative. The second the most exciting, full of action and dynamic camera work. The third story offers the best psychological drama. And the first, well, that speaks for itself. Top movie.
