Deux plot

Nina and Madeleine are two retired women who have been in love for decades. To the outside world, including Madeleine's family, they are simply neighbors on the top floor of their apartment building. They move freely between the two apartments and share their daily lives. One day, however, their relationship is turned upside down when an unexpected event causes Madeleine's daughter to slowly discover the truth.

Widow Martine [Madeleine Girard] and neighbor Nina [Barbara Sukowa] have been having an affair for over 20 years. Nina has finally persuaded Martine to tell her daughter Anne [Léa Drucker] about their relationship so that the ladies can finally move in with each other. Nina is furious when it turns out that Martine backed out at the last minute. Soon after, Martine suffers a stroke that causes her to lose her ability to speak. Nina has to try to show her love and care for Martine without Anne getting wind, but it's getting harder and harder.

Well-acted and superbly directed romantic drama unfortunately lacks depth and contains no surprises. It's not that hard to guess how it ends, but the biggest shortcoming is that hardly anything interesting happens on the way to that slot.

Strong emotional film about an older lesbian couple who keep their relationship hidden from the outside world for fear of the reactions of those around them. The film reminded me a bit of Haneke's Amour or Gaspar Noé's recent Vortex. This is not about dementia, but the consequences after a stroke are the same.

That's where you stand as a partner if no one cares about your relationship. You are then an ordinary meddlesome outsider who literally sees the doors closing in front of you. You are the only one who really cares, but you have evolved into the one who is furthest away from it, painfully so…

Still a gripping love portrait. The focus is not so much on dealing with Madeleine's condition, but on the struggle of her environment and the loss and love of Nina. Strong!

Sensitive psychodrama about a lesbian couple aged 65+, who see the chance to finally come out of the closet slip away because of false shame. The consequences are more or less disastrous.

Despite the depressing story, a pleasure to watch thanks to the strong performances of the two protagonists Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier, two great guys. An impressive movie.

Tender film about true love.

Started well with the opening scene, playfully emphasizing how bad it is when someone stays away from your life.

What follows is a succession of beautiful scenes that aptly and soberly illustrate the mutual closeness and love for each other of the two women.

Mado's shyness, especially towards her children, is typical in such a story.

Brilliant performances adorn this film.

Beautiful drama film, with excellent acting and some moving scenes. Sometimes also beautifully shot, especially a specific close-up of Madeleine in which her eyes are slowly zoomed in.

The plot sometimes takes a bit of a lame turn threats at the door, stone through the window and not everything is well worked out, but the chemistry between the two protagonists is strong. In the end I didn't find it all very exciting, and I also found the climax a bit disappointing. Didn't really understand what the whole fear of coming out was based on either. Was there reason to assume that their children and immediate environment would reject it?

3.5*

The film choice of 'Zomergast' Bibi Dumon Tak, with whom I once had a fight. I found her nagging about those cows and animals rather tiresome, but she did choose a nice film about two elderly lesbian women who see their lives shattered when one of them has a stroke. Have been breathless watching how one becomes powerless, can no longer speak or move and the other is rigorously banned from her life.

Fortunately, it has not become a 'case study', but a film about two women with a dream to leave for Italy, where they once met. But the outside world must not know that. The events that follow are harrowing, but also recognizable. Because even in our daily lives, elderly people who are in need of help are not always treated with care and understanding. After all, the 'environment' always knows better. But there is also humor in this film and the ending is beautiful. I was very impressed with this movie.

Also note the wonderful beginning, with those two playing girls, one of whom has suddenly disappeared. That image will appear later in the film. Those are those little gems that make a movie rise far above mediocrity. So watch.
