At the time —during the Cold War¬— a controversial television film, which was mainly released in theaters in Europe and at that time was good for fierce polemics in the newspapers. Director Meyer succeeds wonderfully in highlighting the horrors of nuclear war. Still, the film (almost a docudrama) is much less impressive now than it was then. Or am I too cynical now?

Despite extensive use of stock footage, the film does have its strong moments. I can imagine it would be exactly the same in reality. The idea of an anonymous enemy at a great distance was palpable and the explosions were otherworldly and terrifying.

We can of course do more in terms of effects, but the essence of a nuclear war is still being touched here, with modest means... That tranquil meadow on a sunny day, just before the total destruction is an image that stays with me .

I have yet to see it surpass the usual action and slick CGI with Brad Pitt and co.
