When the Wind Blows plot

"A horrifying vision of tomorrow."

Jim and Hilda, an elderly couple in rural Britain, one day receive a government brochure warning of the consequences of World War III. Jim and Hilda, however, have a rather romanticized view of the Second World War, and although Jim builds a bomb shelter, they are hardly concerned. The government will take care of them and they have never heard of fallout.

Heavy and sad animated film.

Since Felidae, Akira and South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut I've been experimenting a bit with adult animation films. Akira was great, South Park was funny and Felidae had a nice atmosphere. This one, however, was a completely different ode.

When The Wind Blows I had never heard of it until I came across it in a video. I went looking for it and found very good reviews so I started watching it. The animation is very beautiful, the characters are sweet and it looks so innocent.

Unfortunately, after the bomb falls it's all so sad and so hopeless that you constantly have a heavy feeling that you keep watching. A bad ending is also inevitable. After this I was quite astonished, beautiful film.

Still quite current actually. We know war mainly from films and documentaries. The last witnesses have slowly died or were still children then. WWII was different from WWII, you never know what WWIII will look like. The film of course comes from a period of doom-mongering. The original comic is from 1982 but in 1987 the Cold War was still going on and the fear of The Bomb. Certainly in the early 80s there was a nuclear race between East and West. Actually it is the same now with other parties. And the film partly shows that. The past is behind you and you know the facts better than you do now. If war comes now it can come from different sides with names that are not always known. Only we are now somewhat less paranoid than in the 80s.

The animation uses real images. The use of animation (apart from the way the comic is filmed) gives a somewhat dreamy world. While the real images show reality. There are indeed bombs. There was shooting. There is destruction.

The fear that was there after the war has now somewhat subsided. Everything can be solved through negotiation. The government will solve everything. We will then see what we do, as long as we think logically. In WWII, people did not learn from the mistakes of WWI. Unfortunately, people do not learn from the mistakes of the past. Of course, I do not assume that it will be WWIII tomorrow. If you go through life with that thought, life becomes quite hard.

Beautiful animation, by the maker of the legendary short film The Snowman. With music by Roger Waters and some songs by Genesis and David Bowie. It reminds me a bit of The Wall. Here and there it is perhaps a bit clumsy in terms of animation and it lasts just a bit too long. But quite an impressive film.

Director Jimmy T. Murakami left several key scenes from this adult animation film to specially appointed animators. The result is an often eye-catching mix of animation styles ("Hilda's Dream" impressed me the most) that never overshadows the central story and especially the characters. That is certainly also due to septuagenarians Peggy Ashcroft and John Mills, who lent their voices to the elderly couple Jim and Hilda in a striking and ultimately heartbreaking way.

Jim closely follows the news about the threat of nuclear war, while Hilda thinks that it will not be that bad. When the government warns of an impending nuclear attack via various media, Jim makes the necessary preparations more quickly. Partly because of this, the couple, who have survived WWII together, manage to survive the bombardment. But can Jim and Hilda survive the period of fallout that follows?

David Bowie wrote and performed the title song, and the atmospheric music of Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters effectively frames this compelling story, which becomes increasingly moving as Jim and Hilda try to remain optimistic, while their physical health visibly deteriorates to such an extent that you as a viewer know how this is going to end. Visually brilliant and now (unfortunately) quite topical again, but certainly not suitable for the little ones.
