Attorney Frank Galvin hasn't won a notable case in years and must solicit his clients at mourning rallies. He spends a lot of time in bars. A friend of his wants to throw him one more time a case that, if done well, can bring in a lot of money. Strong court film, this time about a medical negligence.
It is striking how in all those justice films the impact of power and the resulting unfair practices are highlighted and it is also striking how often a jury ignores the letter of the law and makes the heart speak.
Engaging and a certain predictability didn't bother me and there's no doubt that the film is strongly supported by class act like Paul Newman and James Mason.
Charlotte Rampling is also good in her role. I usually saw her movies from the 2000s onwards. I must say that she comes across as very pretty and somewhat mysterious. Reminded me of Lauren Bacall at times.

All very basic.
Lumet is such a director who finds it difficult to assign a style of his own. His films are fairly dry and functional, but often look rather dull and ordinary. Not immediately very exciting to make that your trademark now.
The Verdict is a very typical court film, one in which the course can be guessed from the very beginning and the unexpected setbacks also bring little surprise. The role of Newman is also not the most exciting (the fallen lawyer who wants to unpack again).
Oh, and it still drags on quite nicely. Despite the predictability and the running time, the film is never really boring. The plot unfolds fairly smoothly, but the impression afterwards is that this is a somewhat sad and gray film, as I remember most of Lumet's films.

The acting is also very okay. However, the story never surpasses the standard court thriller and all in all I thought the film was quite nice, but otherwise not very special. 3*
