Now 40 years old and still very, but very, worth viewing. What a movie! Brilliant acting from the cast and memorable scenes galore.
Sometimes I even skip 'the' scene, even if a visit to the dentist is not planned in the short term. New York in the gray '70s always works well for me, what a ambiance! 'Babe''s dingy apartment is a perfect reflection of it.
Nothing but praise for this film, a monument in film history. 4*

Thriller as they are no longer made because of the ADHD generation, used to big steps, home quickly, which has to be operated in the cinema. Read the nagging comments for this. Written by the great screenwriter William Goldman who wrote both the novel and the adaptation for the film. Perhaps the greatest of all the paranoia thrillers of the 1970s: The Parallax View, All The President's Men, Three Days Of The Condor. Film takes its time to unfold the story; refers to the sordid relationship the US government maintained with ex-Nazis after WW2. You see so many cinematic thriller elements here that later films and directors have stolen. I recognized David Fincher's The Game and Peter Weir's Witness for example. Incidentally, Hoffman was almost 40 when he had to pass for the film as a Columbia University student. William Devane was great as a sneak. Special mention to Laurence Olivier who played the Nazi, and how. A year later, he would play the exact opposite (also masterfully) as a Nazi fighter in The Boys From Brazil. Goldman is also the screenwriter of All The President's Men and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid.

This is a typical example of a paranoia thriller. During the Cold War there was mistrust. There were double agents, false identities, wiretapping and ideological conflicts. A student demonstration against environmental pollution marks the zeitgeist. The aftermath of the Communist hunt under Joseph McCarthy was still felt.

New York is portrayed as a cauldron in which different population groups live together and clash with each other. The traffic is hectic. There is constant movement: cars, runners, fountains. It was one of the first times the steadicam was used. There are beautiful matchcuts: from Abebe Bikila to a training Levy; from a grid above a fountain to the fence in Central Park.

The two brothers differ in character. Doc wears expensive clothes and a Rolex; Babe is sleazy and doesn't care about material wealth. Yet there is a strong bond between the two. To follow the finer points of the intrigue, you have to watch more than once and possibly read the book. Oddly enough, the chain of revenge and chase is set in motion after an accidental traffic accident. The violence invades apparently safe places such as a student dorm and a country house.

It is best not to watch the torture scene shortly before an appointment with the dentist. It is more terrifying than mass violence. It is a confrontation between two top actors with a different style. Laurence Olivier was known as the classical thespian. While battling cancer himself, he had to call the loss of health the ultimate theft. Dustin Hoffman was a supporter of method acting. He really got his head under the water, really went for a run, really sweating and panting. Olivier would have reacted in surprise: "Why don't you try acting?"
