Escape from Alcatraz plot

"No one has ever escaped from Alcatraz… and no one ever will!"

On January 18, 1960, Frank Morris landed under heavy guard at America's most feared and infamous prison on the island of Alcatraz - an isolated fortress to which only the most dangerous criminals were transferred and from which there was no return. Driven by a strong urge for freedom and provoked by the unscrupulous and arbitrary punishments of the prison management, he and a few fellow inmates start to prepare a plan that no one has yet succeeded in: escape from Alcatraz.

“Welcome to Alcatraz.”

Strong movie. I often thought of The Shawshank Redemption when watching Escape from Alcatraz, because some scenes seem identical. Escape is a lot darker and rawer. A perfect film for Clint Eastwood and the man is completely in place.

I liked that you don't learn much about the characters and why they're in Alcatraz. You only know something brief about Frank (Eastwood). The preparation is well done but the break itself is of course the highlight. Very exciting and well filmed by Siegel. The atmospheric music also helps. You can see that many prison movies have been copied at Escape from Alcatraz. A deserved compliment.

One of my favorite Eastwood movies. Sometimes you see that The Shawshank Redemption has taken a lot out of this classic. I would therefore find it more deserved that Escape from Alcatraz is number one because Shawshank is essentially the same story, but with some sentimental stuff around it to be able to placate a wide audience.

Here's Frank Morris' breakout raw, dark, and to the point. Fortunately no "documentary" about life in Alcatraz prison but a pure "prison break" film. Due to his high IQ, he slaloms around all obstacles in his way to reach his goal. An aggressive behemoth who wants him as a boyfriend, the paranoid prison guard, the constant rounds of the jailers. The complex escape is beautifully presented and gives rise to some tense moments. Excellent!

Excellent.

Don Siegel makes an entertaining prison film across the board. It's all unspectacular, but solid - the ever-rusty Clint Eastwood fits this picture perfectly. The film is characterized by a pleasantly rippling tempo. The build-up of tension is skillfully directed in a number of scenes. The gray atmosphere gets, in the end, a certain dimension. Afterwards I did some googling about Frank Morris and his companions. It's a shame that the outcome has never been announced.
