I didn't know the book or the series, but I did try the movie. I didn't really know what to expect, but I thought it was an interesting story. The film lasted a little over two hours, but luckily it never got boring and there was still plenty to do.

The acting was fine and the movie looked good.

I was still afraid that it would be a boring costume drama, but this was not that bad and thought it was worth seeing.

Saw the TV series recently, and it was so intriguing and captivating that Evelyn Waugh's book is now on the pile. Yet I also had my reservations, because in those 600 minutes so much was turned upside down that at a certain point I started to wonder whether everything was necessary, whether all those elements contributed something to the whole, or not in some dialogues too. the same could be said with half as many words in half the time. This film just crams everything together in a quarter of the running time of 1981, with some users still finding it boring while for others it goes too fast.
I find myself somewhere in between: the main points of the story are addressed efficiently and the pace is excellent, so I feel this is a worthy film adaptation. The roles are also well cast, with the exception of Ben Whishaw who doesn't have the charisma needed for Sebastian (as Anthony Andrews did), and visually it's a picture.
Of course, some things and characters are less prominent now (which particularly affects Bridey), Sebastian disappears from the story a bit too quickly, and the way his mother is removed from the picture is not very elegant[ /spoiler], but all in all I can be quite content with this version. (But I don't know if that will still be the case after reading the novel.)

Emma Thompson steals the show in this movie. Unfortunately, she is rarely seen.

The young cast does a great job, but it's all very well behaved. In fact, almost 'nothing' happens. And then keep watching for more than 2 hours.

That's amazing. Is this because the movie is rock solid? No, the antiquity and the mansion are interesting. Nothing special. It's not bad, but certainly not very good either.
