My god what a frumpy swoon film sometimes, with a terrible soap-like quality. The daughter of a wealthy aristocrat, 8 years before the fact and under pressure from her family, dumped her betrothed, Captain Wentworth, because he was unlucky. Now their passionate feelings for each other have not been extinguished, but many other obstacles stand in the way of their happiness. Throughout the film, the dialogues are about linking those aristocrats and that makes for a fairly dull film. Especially since there was little doubt about how it would end. Furthermore, although this is not my cup of tea, it is talentedly acted (Hawkins ) and portrayed, but it is an idealization of the fairytale romance of that time with green gardens, fountains and castles. The fact that Captain Wentworth does not look like a pig but is a nice big soldier also fits into this forced picture. But the richness, the beauty, that's all sand in the eye.

Typical British costume drama: neatly put together but also extremely solid, without a moment that surprises, without a moment that is somewhere special. And that makes it a bit boring, especially towards the end. It's almost stiff. Also the acting, nothing to bother you but that's about it. Little empathetic. This just feels like formula work without any love in it. 2.5*.

Another tacky adaptation of Jane Austen. Where do those directors get the idea from that in the nineteenth century that horrible wallpaper music was constantly playing in the background? The story is followed fairly faithfully, but little is left of the sparkling, humorous style. They make a faint melodrama out of it.
