Pride & Prejudice plot

"A romance ahead of its time."

In class-conscious England of the late 18th century, the five Bennet sisters—including the determined Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and the young Lydia (Jena Malone)—are raised by their mother (Brenda Blethyn) with a single goal: a find suitable man and get married. When a wealthy bachelor moves into one of the neighborhood mansions, the Bennets are hopeful: the sisters are sure to find something they like among the new neighbor's many friends. But when Elizabeth meets the charming and - so they say - rather snobbish Mr. Darcy (Matthew MacFadyen) get the dolls dancing...

Pure romance from a time when love was mainly translated by pride/wealth and prejudice, because everything went according to rules and etiquette. The story is known from the book by Jane Austin. Not only have they been filmed several times before, but also several other rom-coms base their common thread on this story. Joe Wright's version does not want to make it 'special' by putting too much humor, modernization or something into it or by turning it into a musical. It is a romantic story, which must convey the necessary romance, but at the same time also style. Without it being stale.

Clearly attention has been paid to the eye, so that it is an added value to go from book to film. Everything is made with love and great attention. The costumes are right, perfect casting and every shot that is shot is a feast for the eyes. I am thinking, for example, of the scene in which Elizabeth is standing by the water and a flock of swans rises perfectly into the water. I'm right in a painting. Whether everything is historically correct will be the worst, it comes across very fitting with the story.

Joe Wright made here after Atonement, also with Keira Knightley. Also a nice film, but you notice that he might have wanted to build a lot further on this film. In Pride & Prejudice, everything is just perfect. I especially noticed that actors like Keira Knightley and Donald Sutherland act much better here than you are used to from them. Much quieter and less overacting. Tom Hollander and Matthew Macfadyen are also in the right place in the right role. A pleasant surprise this movie. Romance has never been so beautiful and without getting corny.

Mediocre.

I find the first half really disappointing. The film is one big feast of caricatures, from Keira Knightley's free-spirited Elizabeth Benett to Matthew McFadyen's ridiculously stiff Mr. Darcy to the two giggling sisters. Despite the grandiose decoration and costuming, the film is therefore quite heavy on the stomach for a long time. It takes a very long time before there is a more humane and normal way of doing things. Ironically, this more or less coincides with the appearance of Judi Dench - a good actress but also a rock-solid cliché, and it's no different here.

So I could taste the last half hour much better than the opening hour, but taking it by the throat as the later genre colleague Jane Eyre from 2011, for example, was able to, is definitely not in it. A reasonable disappointment, then.

2.5

Not so much my favorite genre. That turned out pretty quickly and I still had to struggle past the first half hour. Apart from some giggling from some teenage girls and a lot of dancing, not too much happened. Fortunately, the plot did evolve a bit with Keira Knightley coming more to the fore. Her attraction and repulsion of "Mr Darcy" was worked out quite finely.

In addition, you can't deny that the decor was really beautiful. Some scenic beautiful statues along the water. But the costumes and the interior were also provided with the necessary pomp and circumstance. A lot of effort has clearly been put into taking care of everything down to the last detail. Also a nice cast. Not the first time Knightley has starred in such a role.
