Not bad, but not particularly good either, with a Jane who is perfect for her "man" but a Rochester who isn't mysterious, enigmatic and stern enough to really impress and come to life (or is my perception of him colored too much by Orson Welles' 1943 rendition?). Beautifully decorated, with a beautiful gloomy Thornfield which fortunately is not made into a picture book, but the chemistry between the two main characters is not palpable to me. I can be happy with this version, but I really can't find it good, maybe because of what my esteemed predecessor AC1 writes in his last sentence. Is everything too flat?

For the fans of the genre, but still well done. The maker really wanted to bring the book to the screen with attention to the dialogues, beautiful acting and especially beautiful sets and costumes. It is with great respect for the book and therefore does not go anywhere creatively, but it does bring the beautiful story of Charlotte Brontë to the big screen. Especially Mia Wasikowska shines in the title role. Striking are a few supporting roles that always stand out to me. Think of Holliday Grainger (also in The Borgias, Anna Karenina and Great Expectations) and Tamzin Merchant (also in The Tudors and Pride & Prejudice) who were made for this genre in their small supporting roles.

The film could use a little more spice and does not equal the beautiful Pride & Prejudice, but it is quite a beautiful romantic film. I like this.
