After a hard life as an orphan, Jane Eyre becomes governess to Edward Rochester, lord of Thornfield, a mysterious estate. I've seen almost every film version of Charlotte Brontë's phenomenal book. This is and remains my favorite version, thanks to the beautiful roles of Orson Welles and an excellent Joan Fontaine. In addition, the dark staging reflects the atmosphere of the story very aptly. Also notable for the early role of a still very young Elizabeth Taylor, whose burgeoning beauty was already undeniable.

The film is based on a world famous novel and I therefore did not expect that the story would not interest me. Fortunately, there are nice protagonists with beautiful sentences, even if we see Joan Fontaine's longing gaze a bit too much and Orson Welles sometimes forgets his British accent. And how often is that smoke machine on!
Nice by the way to read that the dark girl at the beginning is Elizabeth Taylor. I've been wondering.

The film adaptation is close to the book and beautifully brings the Gothic drama to life. By cutting into a few large passages from the book (which are nicely captured), it has become a film of one and a half hours. Most Jane Eyre film adaptations take a lot longer. A wonderful story and the cast brings this story to life. It is a literary film in which the dialogues and the story are central. But many shots in this black-and-white film are beautifully done and provide the necessary drama and mystery.
