Sense and Sensibility plot
"Lose your heart and come to your senses."
On his deathbed, Mr. Dashwood left the house behind his only son from his first marriage. But what should become of his second wife and her daughters, who are evicted from the manor because of the inheritance? They are given shelter by their friendly cousin. Ahhhhhhhrgh.
Taiwan is a beautiful film country, which unfortunately gets too little attention. However, there is one who has managed to work his way up to a commercially interesting figure. Let it also be one of the worst Taiwanese directors I know.
Not everything Ang Lee makes is bad, but this is yet another one in the "executioner" category that should be forgotten as soon as possible. How he manages to film such a bouquet series story is a mystery to me, the result makes absolutely no sense.
Given the commentary here, the strong acting should give the film a big boost, but I didn't notice much of that. Little nuance in the characters and especially a lot of stiff raking. It's also a bit like a period film, but it's still below average.
The story really didn't grab me for a second. The classic romantic worries, but between annoying people. Visually also a complete dragon of a film and the soundtrack is also so steamy that it makes you completely paralyzed.
The fact that it also takes another 135 minutes is the final blow. A dragon of a movie, completely uninteresting and hard to get through. Ang Lee, he should have stayed in Taiwan, his movies still looked like that.

Dry matter. You often have that with costume dramas, but Sense and Sensibility makes it very colorful. It all looks neat and the actors do a good job, but the story isn't too exciting and it's very slow at times. Actors like Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant know how to make it, and it's always nice to see a young Kate Winslet at the start of her career. Very solid with that well-known British stiffness, but fortunately the actors provide some fireworks.
