I've always had a soft spot for historical novels and costume movies. It is therefore not surprising that I liked this film about one of the most colorful figures from the English aristocracy. It is a richly varied, beautifully designed drama with excellent performances and a captivating story, which does its best to stay close to what actually happened at the time. Compliments for the beautiful costumes and for the "ménage à trois" actors Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes and the beautiful Hayley Atwell.

Sometimes I find it a disadvantage to stick to the facts in a costume film like this, where for example a Pride & Prejudice is less bothered by. The story of The Duchess is slightly less interesting in that respect. Fortunately, the film can live on some strong actors, beautiful costumes and impressive sets.

The actors are also always more beautiful than the real people would have looked according to the paintings. Keira Knightley is already familiar with these kinds of roles, she previously starred in Pride & Prejudice. Ralph Fiennes also plays a role here that fits nicely into the film, without being forced to draw all the attention to himself. Very professional actor.

The whole is not bad and especially recommended for enthusiasts. Outside of that, it might not attract as many people. The story isn't all that special either. All in all a good movie.

Excellent.

Surprisingly good movie, The Duchess. I didn't have very high hopes for it - Keira Knightley in the lead role in a costume drama... But the film is coming in anyway. The selfish squiggles of Mr. Duke do an excellent job. Ralph Fiennes, without being conspicuous, steals the show in his - in my opinion - best role so far. His hypothermic way of acting and his prehistoric way of thinking are extremely frustrating. He brings it with the necessary subtlety.

Knightley, on the other hand, is not really known to me as subtle, let alone as a strong actress. Also here I find them by far the least acting cast member, but bon. She was apparently hot in costume drama land during the production period.

Furthermore, it is dressed up to perfection, as is usually the case in this genre. The costumes seem to me to be perfectly fine, but I also always enjoy those authentic looking castles and estates. Director Saul Dibb brings few innovative things in terms of visual direction, but simply provides a stylish film and lives on the decoration. A logical choice.
