After some really bad sequels, which are wiped out of continuity by this part, this is once again a decent and fun Halloween movie. The plot/story is equally bad in this one, but that is made up for by a rather nice and slow build-up of tension, decent characters (and of course the return of Jamie Lee Curtis; the fact that her character has become a functional alcoholic after the events of the original movie is surprisingly appropriate) and a good boarding school setting. Nice short playing time of 80 minutes too. It's just a shame that the most stupidly introduced element in the franchise, namely that Laurie is Myers' half sister, is included in this film, but hey, this part is also ignored by later films, so [i]who cares[/i ] actually. 3*.

Mediocre.

It is always a good move for a marketing company if you have an icon (Laurie) return to the series for a series like Halloween. After all, Jamie Lee Curtis also became famous with the film, but returning for this film, to this series, turned out to be a mistake. It's a seriously underrated role for her.

You also immediately notice that Curtis' acting is a lot further above the teenagers, although they are starting star actors and there are few performances that are really bad. The main problem facing this film is director Miner's direction. His slasher background cannot really be read from here.

The kills for a slasher movie like this are very substandard. You would think that this kind of series works with the formula "bigger is better", but this part is actually a bit less good and especially safer than a lot of other parts in the series. Maybe it's even the worst part of the series, although I didn't think part 3 was about anything either.

Furthermore, it is all rather colorless directing without any form of tension or visual flair. It's all very much directed to Hollywood standards, apparently from a time when originality was a foreign concept. This film is simply a slightly more modern iteration of what has been done before. Myers himself still remains an icon to watch, but as a whole the film is disappointing.

Still, I have to admit that the film has a nice pace and some nice moments in between. The scenes between Curtis and Hartnett still felt quite natural, for which I can compliment both actors. Story never takes too stupid a turn, otherwise this is a seriously mediocre slasher that is far too safe and well-behaved to justify a good spot in the series. Unfortunately.

After the nonsensical sixth part, things are kept a bit simpler. The plot is simple, but effective. It's fun and that's the main thing. The only thing that is a bit disturbing is that the teenagers come into the picture a lot in the first half of the film, but in the end they are pushed aside at the end of the film. That's a shame, because some elements now feel superfluous. In the first half of the film, everything builds up slowly. Then they thunder through the second half of the 82 minutes at high speed. Make the film fifteen minutes longer and you should have a little more body. Or focus on 1 element and keep the film short. Now the balance between the youngsters and Laurie Strode does not feel right.

Myers doesn't behave too irritatingly, but his mask is of course really not possible. He really does look like a clown and with that hair he looks like a big Chucky. Sometimes it really does make you laugh. Besides, I don't think it's really a mask. Yes, that was the in all parts, but there it really seemed to be a part of Myers. He seemed (figuratively) fused with the mask. You couldn't really look deep into his eyes. As if he has no soul and looks you into black holes. Here you are just looking him in the eye all the time. Pity. I'm bummed about things like this, because with Strode they finally do it again after 4 sequels nice and simple, but then these kinds of details are hugely disappointing. A big improvement, but some improvements that could have been worked out better.

3.0 > 2.5*
