Romance in Manhattan plot

Czech immigrant Karel Novak is told on Ellis Island that the visa price has been increased from $50 to $200. Because he cannot afford this, he is put on the boat back to Holland. But he jumps into the water and swims to Manhattan, where he loses his wallet. While stealing donuts to eat, he meets Sylvia Dennis, a 19-year-old chorister, who lets him sleep in the attic. Sylvia's brother helps Karel find a job and soon the love between him and Sylvia blossoms. If they want to get married, Karel will have to find a lawyer who can help him in the case concerning his illegal status. Lawyer Halsey J. Pander turns out not to be the right person for this, because he has Karel charged immediately in exchange for money.
