Young Copperfield's mother dies, leaving him at the mercy of his stepfather. He meets a man, with whom he becomes part of the family. When he dies, he flees to his aunt in the countryside, where he lives for a while and meets all kinds of colorful characters. The story later shifts to a period when the elder Copperfield experiences some amorous entanglements.
