Beautiful film with good roles by Jimmy Stewart and June Allyson, but of course it is especially the beautiful music that deserves stars here.

Besides the timeless classics of Glenn Miller also Basin Street Blueswith Louis Armstrong and Gene Krupa. Beautiful!

Beautiful film in which James Stewart takes on the role of Glenn Miller with great brilliance. The film is mainly an ode to the music of the artist and that unconsciously has its mark. You have to like the music to like the film. But I do like it and enjoy with a smile the life of Glenn Miller that unfortunately ended too early. Remarkably quickly also after the death of the man (died in 1944 and the film is from 1955). That provides a personal touch that is further enhanced by on the one hand the help of some people in the crew who were close to Glenn Miller, and various cameos of contemporaries that give the atmosphere that little bit extra.

Lots of music that for me as a fan actually turns out positive. It never really becomes a top film, it is just not fast enough for that. But the atmosphere is good and the music sounds nice and the two most important roles of Glenn and Helen Miller are also done well. So it has become a very good film!

Stewart as Miller.

The most striking thing about this film is that Mann avoids almost all the negative. No rise & fall as is so often the case in this kind of films, only the positive is filtered and strung together into a nice feel good film. I liked it quite a bit, that dramatic chatter rarely adds anything.

This leaves a cheerful film. I usually can't stand Stewart, but together with Allyson he forms a nice duo. I already knew Miller's music (it also helps that the film picks his biggest hits of course), through a lot of smaller scenes the context of those well-known numbers is outlined.

The second part indeed relies heavily on the musical, but without really slowing down the pace of the film. The ending is a bit rushed, Miller who as an illustrious predecessor of a group of acquaintances also lost his life in a plane crash, which probably contributed to the fact that this film could not really adopt a rise & fall structure.

The most tragic figure in this film is Ed. Ed does not appear on screen, but had to give Helen up to Miller after an engagement of at least two years. One phone call was apparently enough, that must have hurt Ed. But that was apparently how it used to be.

2.0*
