Quite a nice movie, especially for around Christmas too. I didn't know that last one, but if I had to watch a James Stewart movie for Christmas, there's not much chance that it would be this one. Not at all after seeing this film I must confess, because although Stewart is a celebrity and he makes the film very worthwhile, I couldn't stand Margaret Sullavan, with her (stuffed?) voice. She's quite fun to watch, but she can also be heard a bit too much during the film. Add to that a romance that keeps getting postponed and it should be clear that this felt like a bit longer to me than I had hoped. Although I must say that it is not the case that the film loses so much of quality that there is nothing to enjoy, because the film is otherwise very nicely put together.

A film that is a nice alternation between feel-good and some light-hearted but human drama.
For a 1940s film, the film is little dated and the characters are better developed than in many comedy/Christmas movies today.
The really sweet scenes have been saved for the end and therefore work extra well, thought it was really heartwarming that that boss was suddenly so worried that someone from his staff would be alone for Christmas was a really nice ending and completes the movie for me.
It's also nice that Margaret Sullavan once put down a character that wasn't so cliché and immediately fell into Stewart's arms.

3.5*
