Captains Courageous plot

"As great as "Mutiny on the Bounty""

Rich and spoiled boy Harvey falls overboard from an ocean cruiser. Harvey is fished out by the crew of a fishing sloop and demands the captain to take him immediately to the nearest harbor. However, the sea bonk is not interested in that: Harvey will have to stay on board the fishing boat for at least three months. It is reluctantly, but the boy learns a lot about the sea at that time and even more about the primitive, rough, but generous fishermen. His whole worldview is shaken and his life will never be the same.

Successful images from the sea (1937!) in a film that contains some moral lessons for young and old.

The opening scenes with the young people are also very good and although the entire "evolution" on that boat is a bit long, it is still quite enjoyable as a whole.

Not an unimportant cast with Tracy, Barrymore, Douglas, Carradine and of course the young Mickey Rooney, but here somewhat in the shadow of Freddie Bartholomew, actually not getting any further than teenage roles

I hesitated for a long time whether or not I should give this over-sentimental tearjerker five stars, but despite all the conceivable clichés, you really need a granite mind not to hold back a few tears towards the end. And that is also a quality. Also works great with a laugh track underneath, by the way.

men must become and women just are, spoiled children make terrible adults, 2 pieces of wisdom that are universal and timeless (certainly today).

Tough love is something that is a main theme in this film, something that the boy's real father does not understand but thanks to the accident the boy's character is ultimately saved, that is necessary with the help of hard lessons and even trauma is a necessary evil.

It is actually presented in a fairly mild manner but is nevertheless effective in its message.

The boy plays well but once he is on the boat he gets even better, Tracy does a good job and is perfect for the role of mentor.
