Tap dancers Johnny Brett and King Shaw are both in and out of the theater. So when King Shaw becomes the partner of celebrated Broadway dancer Clare Bennett through a mistaken identity, a role that producer Bob Casey had originally assigned Johnny, Johnny continues to support him. But then King Shaw falls in love with Clare and when that love turns out to be unrequited, he thinks Johnny has taken over her.
