“Sanity's not a choice, Marshall. You can't just choose to get over it.”

Shutter Island remains a fantastic psychological thriller from Martin Scorsese. The entire film has you on the edge of your seat, and the ending remains impressive. A perfect end to a special viewing experience. The first few scenes with that bombastic music, which puts you right in the movie. The claustrophobic, dark and rainy island, the amazing performances of Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Williams, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley, the investigation of the missing patient, the memories Teddy has of the war and his wife, the explanation of Dr. Cawley at the end etc. Everything is correct.

I would especially like to mention the scene between Teddy, Dolores and the kids. It's disgusting and sad, but also beautifully filmed by Scorsese. In the final section, Scorsese puts all the puzzle pieces together and it fits perfectly. You could say that everything fits a little too perfectly. Little is left to the imagination, and everything is neatly rounded off. But somehow I craved that too, and anyway everything that comes before it is movie magic. A bleak masterpiece by Scorsese.

Shortly after WWII, US Marshalls Teddy Daniels [Leonard DiCaprio] and Chuck Aule [Mark Ruffalo] travel to an institution on Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of patient Rachel. During the investigation, Teddy is increasingly haunted by memories of Dachau's liberation and other flashbacks that he can't quite place. Although screenwriter Laeta Kalagrodis only plays the trump cards towards the end, the mystery isn't that hard to solve. Scorcese directs with the usual visual flair, but it's mainly thanks to DiCaprio's intense acting and impressive supporting cast that this transcends mediocrity.

Revisited after many years. Saw it in the cinema at the time and left a great impression.
In any case, I am very charmed by Scorsese's work, it is clear that this film is one of his best.

The fact that I have already seen this film twice gives this film the advantage that you will look at the film differently. With the foreknowledge you have, it is actually even more fun to go into the film.
Without revealing too much, it is recommended to pay particular attention to the people around Teddy. How the plot eventually unfolds is simply very well designed.

Visually it is a real gem. Some scenes do stand out. The arrival on the island, supported by a wonderfully terrifying soundtrack, the hurricane and the scene of the children in the water being pulled out of the water by diCaprio. A scene that goes through the marrow and shows DiCaprio once again what a phenomenal actor he is.
The whole cast is really strong. Add to that the camera work and the script and you almost have a masterpiece.

4.5* stood and remain standing
