Hedonist Gaston Lachaille is tired of the rich life, especially the women. The only moments he really enjoys are those he spends with his uncle's friend, Madame Alvarez, and her granddaughter Gigi. He learns that he is in love with Gigi, but she is about to follow in her grandmother's footsteps as a courtesan.

A wonderful musical, which has lost none of its charm after all these years. The actors compete with each other in the midst of beautiful settings and the cinematography is also of an unusual beauty. What I did miss a little are ballets, especially because Leslie Caron is a gifted dancer. But that does not detract from the fact that I enjoyed this review very much.
In my opinion, this is, together with Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), the best musical in Vincente Minnelli's oeuvre. The ending may have a high handkerchief content, but the surprised and happy reaction of Caron to the no longer expected marriage proposal is nevertheless one of those final scenes that have been etched in my memory for decades. A beautiful ending to a very entertaining film.

Good film about a rich bachelor who falls for the granddaughter of a good friend of his. An old-fashioned musical with a fairly daring story (for that time), about an old-fashioned way of courting. The songs are nice, and the cast brings it nicely. But above all it all looks wonderfully beautiful and colorful (the beautiful costumes, sets and locations).

A somewhat lesser musical, although I especially like Leslie Caron. She made her debut in An American in Paris, in which Maurice Chevalier would normally also play. But at that time it was still wrongly assumed that he had collaborated with the Germans and was rejected for the film. Only later in the 50s was he reinstated and he could be seen in Hollywood films, in which Gigi. Again with Caron who is now 27 years old. Which makes it seem less creepy when she plays the role of the young Gigi that Louis Jordan's character falls in love with.
The concept is somewhat reminiscent of My Fair Lady and Gigi also got a song from that (so to speak). The song Say a Prayer for Me Tonight was written for My Fair Lady, but was scrapped before the musical started on stage and later picked up again for this film Gigi.
Gigi does have some nice moments, but does little in terms of choreography and songs. Apart from some nice shots (including at the end) it is even for me as a musical lover rather too much color present. Then at the Academy Awards a clean sweep of 9 Academy Awards out of 9 nominations. In the meantime somewhat snowed under by many other better musicals.
