A surprisingly compelling adventure film with a great cast. You'd think Clark 'George Clooney' Gable would be all over the place, but in the end every actor puts his best foot forward. Charles Laughton, in particular, stars in the role of Captain Bligh. The strong acting results in more credibility and empathy. The story also offers enough variety, with characters that have a clear 'character arc'. The stopover in Tahiti reminded me for a moment of Tabu, in which a group of islanders paddle towards a ship in the same way. The dreamy location contrasts sharply with the situation on the ship and gives the inevitable mutiny more impact. And while the mutiny itself looks a bit clunky, you're glad the crew is finally standing up for themselves. The question of whether it really is a matter of good versus evil resurfaces moments later, when the captain is left for dead on a rowboat along with several others.

In short, an exciting ride with a remarkably high production value. Might get a bit too long winded towards the end. For example, I did not find the process very relevant. I would also have preferred Christian's fate to be kept in the dark. Nevertheless, recommended.

An eighteenth-century expedition to the South Pacific was the equivalent of a twentieth-century voyage to the moon. MGM spared no expense to make this sea adventure look as spectacular as possible. It contains real footage of Tahiti and Pitcairn Island, but most of it was shot in California and some nearby islands. Large sets were built, often with a screen of raging sea waves in the background.

Captain Bligh is presented as a megalomaniac sadist, a role that Charles Laughton plays with gusto. Fletcher Christian is the charming insurgent played by a clean-shaven Clark Gable. Byam is between them with a loyalty dilemma. Some secondary characters provide comic intermezzos. The real reason for the expedition was to collect breadfruit and to record the native language. Tahiti is presented as a paradise place with willing women. Main man Hitihiti is played by Bill Bambridge, an actor who was born in Tahiti. The historical facts were not followed everywhere, but it is true that Fletcher Christian founded a new colony on Pitcairn Island and that he left behind children.

Still a bit of a special atmosphere, the humor almost seems to nullify the nastiness and sadism of the captain (a very strong role by Laughton), so that there is almost no grim atmosphere.

It makes the film with this theme almost lighthearted and that starts with the recruitment of crew members and that sometimes comes across as quite strange.

Still, I thoroughly enjoyed this classic that still looks nice and doesn't get bored for a moment.
