Chernobyl Diaries plot

"Experience the Fallout"

A group of six young tourists decides to hire an 'extreme tour guide' - away from the fixed and obligatory roads. The guide takes them to the city of Pripyat, the former home of the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a desolate city for 25 years now. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, the group finds themselves trapped in this place. They soon discover that they are not alone...

We are all very critical.

I personally found this movie very entertaining. I'm always amazed when a horror movie manages to scare me, because you'd think you've seen it all by now.

Chernobyl Diaries has a very special story, and the location makes the film extra scary and gave it an oppressive atmosphere. I thought the characters acted well. (Jesse McCartney looks so much like Leonardo DiCaprio in his younger days!) The scares were well built up. I often thought: What the fuck and Holy shit! Fun, whimsical ending that gave me the shivers

Great horror movie.

Rating: spacious 3.5*

It was horror Sunday here today and this one seemed suitable for a good scare. I'm definitely a fan of the subgenre, so extreme tourism going wrong here. A horror is half done when it is set in a desolate, terrifying setting and this one definitely has it. It is bursting with atmosphere with all those beautiful locations. So yes, half pass... I could still place the mediocre acting in the first half, it wasn't really important at that time.

But then after half an hour I suddenly realized that I had already seen the film or at least parts of it because I vaguely remembered the scene in the apartment building. And yes, that didn't bode well… But still looked further.

Actually, the film has to rely on its strong, first half. When the flight starts, it all collapses and it becomes a run-of-the-mill horror that never gets a hold of anything. Of course there are also some other films in the genre that can be compared to and then you just have to admit that this one is not that strong.

The actors also fail when they have to convey fear and despair. I especially found Uri and Paul's acting unbelievable at certain moments. An experienced guide who is completely thrown off balance when his van doesn't start anymore and a brother who has a breakdown at all possible moments and the rest of the gang apparently wants it as soon as possible… Or maybe it was the writer's fault. Because the story is actually not that good.

But good try and once again kudos to the location.

A film in the style of [Rec] and The Descent with a cliché cast. The idea is simple, you know that at least a large part of the group will not make it to the end. It's a horror movie after all. The build-up is nicely done with scares that don't mean much at first sight. But enough work to build atmosphere. It is not an innovative horror, but the atmosphere is good and the cast fits nicely into the story. Fans of the genre will enjoy this.
