Heaven's Gate plot

"What one loves about life are the things that fade."

James Averill is the sheriff of Johnson County, Wyoming. Because the region is doing very well, many new immigrants are moving there. These new immigrants barely profit from the economic success and some of them steal livestock from wealthy landowners to support themselves. This is much to the chagrin of the landowners, who draw up a death list with 125 immigrants and send bounty hunters on it. Averil is in love with Ella, who runs a brothel, but he has competition from Nathan D. Champion, one of the bounty hunters. All three play a different role in the conflict between the landowners and the immigrants, which only makes the love triangle more complex.

Just yesterday I sacrificed a few hours of my shrinking life time to watch the long version of this drama.

A repeated attempt to discover what apparently enthuses others about the film.

Unfortunately it didn't work out.

My rating has even been revised downwards.

What I see are often very nice pictures (sometimes too "brown" for my taste), acceptable acting by some of the cast, and a muddled story that drags on as if someone has pulled the handbrake.

Depressing all the way.

A film that doesn't seem to gain momentum even with the fast-forward button.

The pause button, on the other hand, offered some relief when things got too bad.

A lot of unnecessarily shot kilometers of film.

(All recordings with John Hurt should have been removed from me anyway)

A story in which, despite the mass of characters, there is hardly anyone with whom you as a spectator get any bond.

The chaotic final shooting was more of a low point than a bouncer for me.

Anyway, I'm not going to do this to myself again.

Others are allowed to enjoy it.

In 1980, Michael Cimino was a celebrated director in Hollywood. After his blockbuster The Deer Hunter (1978) he could make whatever he wanted, and he chose a Western. With an astronomical budget of $ 44 million for that time, he made the most expensive Western of all time. No expense was spared: a complete western town was built, an expensive star cast was hired and no extra or less was looked at. However, the film is considered one of the biggest flops in cinema history. Critics mercilessly sabotaged the film and the public stayed away en masse.

The story therefore has little substance: something about American cattle barons who target Eastern European newcomers. In addition, there are some romantic entanglements between Kris Kristofferson and Isabelle Huppert that do not come out at all. However, the art direction is beautiful, which cannot be otherwise with such a sky-high budget, but unfortunately that cannot save the film. In any case, it took me a lot of effort to sit through the entire two and a half hours. 2*

Reasonable film about a number of landowners who are not happy with all the migrants who come. A large-scale film that knows how to portray the era well. It also all looks beautiful. Nice decoration and nice camera work. Quite long winded. The characters are not really captivating and there are many moments where little happens in terms of storytelling.
