strong. Brutal violence and moving moments merge seamlessly. Beautiful too, that scene from Coburn with those hookers. How, happy as a child, he plays with the hooker's nipple in the bath, while he seems to sense his possible end.

For 2 hours, the story meanders along occasionally beautiful landscapes. The mellow soundtrack composed and performed by Bob Dylan is also decisive. If the intention was to deliver a work with little tension - despite some action scenes and potentially tense moments - they succeeded very well. Perhaps it seems the intention was mainly to give a melancholic atmosphere - the end of the Old West you know - and no more than that, with that emphatically soft minor music.

James Coburn and Kris Kristofferson are worthy lead roles. It's funny that Billy The Kid was ugly in real life according to certain sources, so anything but the image of a sixties rock star as is the case here. He also comes out better in the film.

The added value of Bob Dylan as Elias is fairly non-existent, although he does contribute to the nicest scene (in which he reads the texts of bean preserves on Coburn's orders). His presence - even if he says little - is mainly a needless distraction.

Revisionism here goes beyond establishing a realistic view of the West. One myth gets busted but another is created with these kinds of movies. Too bad it doesn't make for an interesting film.
