Chocolat plot

"…and the world is still indulging!"

Time has stood still in the French village of Lansquenet, until the beautiful young Vianne Rocher and her daughter open a chocolate shop in this friendly but slumbered place. She turns out to have magical gifts by choosing the right kind of chocolate for each resident. The stern, stern villagers melt for her. Their hidden desires come out and everyone seems to become more open and free. The conservative mayor sees his power disappear and starts a fight against this renewal. When a handsome stranger suddenly appears in the village, who loosens up everything with Vianne herself, this is only the beginning of a very passionate relationship.

A very beautiful feel-good film full of symbolism.

Anyone who grew up in a small village can imagine this village from the film to some extent: the way people gossip, interact with each other, keep an eye on each other... In any case, very recognizable to me. Just like the unrest, the chatter and the cynicism that comes with a change in the village, in this case the opening of a chocolate shop.

The role that chocolate plays in this film can be taken both literally and figuratively, the effect is the same: people find themselves and with it their joy of life, which was dulled in everyone long ago by ecclesiastical dogmas and the fear of what the neighbors will say. . The most nasty people also appear to simply do what they think is best, and it turns out that behind every stern and angry mask there is a person in need. Just like that behind every smile there are also a few tears.

Depp's role is a bit on the small side, so he doesn't add much to the big picture of the film. His gypsy club stands for everything the village abhors (freedom, pleasure, debauchery) and is therefore mainly intended to propel the plot further. Not a big deal, but he deserved a little more playing time.

A fairy tale with a nice message. Sweet as milk chocolate, yes. But what else do you expect from such a title?

4*

Everything that isn't supposed to work works perfectly. Hallström really understands the art of balancing. And with the right balance, then fully exploit the chosen elements.

A filmmaker who can easily be dismissed as sentimental, kitschy or crowd-pleasing. In a way that is right, but meant as a compliment, because there are countless "such" films that fail to distinguish themselves.

Wonderful film (even in a literal sense) that I am amazed that has eluded me for twenty years.

Very nice charming film in which a certain rustic dreamy atmosphere is created as you also find in other (French) films such as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001 ) or Au Revoir Là-Haut (2017). It's no coincidence that I also think it's French, although Chocolat is British, but still perfectly reflects that French a la campaign feeling.

The light-hearted undertone of the plot is beautifully portrayed by Hallström and he strikes the ideal balance between the plot and the entertainment value of the viewer without losing sight of the whole (or concept). He is assisted in this by the well-cast Juliette Binoche who is very good in her role. One woman out of a thousand! The chocolate theme is also extremely successful. Who doesn't melt for chocolate? The contrast with the devoutly religious villagers is great...

Too bad about the little telling role of Depp. Does little come out of the picture or do we expect too much from a role of a world star? Yet I also especially remember the sweet moral of carpe diem and the fact that tolerance and kindness are more important virtues than following some church dogmas ...
