Carne plot

A nameless horse butcher, abandoned by his wife after she had a child who couldn't speak, runs a business while trying to raise his mute daughter. After a horrific incident coupled with uncontrolled outbursts of violence, the butcher finds himself in a downward spiral, regardless of any dignity left in him.

With this debut film, albeit a short film, Gaspar Noé immediately put himself on the map as a controversial director who you either have to hate or admire. Shocking images are shown where sensitive souls and specifically animal lovers close their eyes at the opening scene. These are images that occasionally appear in newsreels or interpretation programs when they examine the slaughterhouses. A little later the explicit images of a birth...

In this way, Noé sketches the private and professional life of a butcher somewhere in France. The man is responsible for raising his mute daughter and goes quite far in doing so. Suggestive at times, but fortunately the emphasis lies elsewhere and the unconditional sacrifice is reflected. His and their lives take a drastic turn and he is weighed down by life.

Clever plot from Noé that ensures a certain coherence of events. Already a promising director then, regardless of his visual means that some people find objectionable. Nice editing and good atmospheric setting too. Not bad for a debut!

What preceded Seul Contre Tous. The film that I have now seen a long time ago, and reviewed twice.

But it's still fresh in the back of my mind. Knowing that there was a prequel that kind of passed me by.

In Carne, which actually takes place just before the events in Seul Contre Tous, the filming method is the same.

The silence, the nihilism, the inner voice of Philipe Nahon and also those startling sounds that can be heard briefly during specific events. Here we focus a little more on raising his apathetic daughter, and why she really became apathetic. She was not raised at all because dad was too busy with his butcher's shop. Father does notice that he becomes quite desirable when she starts to develop secondarily, while she still has the thinking capacity of a baby. Well, so far... That should say it all.

And then the revenge and spending time in jail... Something that is introduced in Seul Contre Tous. Here we get to see the footage of that... and then I keep forgetting that this short film is still from 1991 while SCT was released seven years later.

It was effective. The routine slaughter that animal activists have a say in, his cups of coffee at the café opposite, the frustrations he gets when his daughter is unable to eat his pieces of horse meat independently. At the end, Noé manages to put together a beautiful flickering montage that feels almost creepy. The end credits ride was another moment of letting off steam.

A short but powerful foretaste of our eccentric friend.

Although director Gaspar Noé seeks out controversy a little too emphatically within the first few scenes, Carne remains a wonderfully idiosyncratic and energetic work. One that, with a playing time of only 40 minutes, does not last a minute too long, otherwise things quickly stretch themselves unnecessarily. The camera work and editing in particular stand out, where a lot of experimentation is done to continuously hold the viewer's attention. Philippe Nahon does an excellent job and the secondary characters are also pleasantly disturbed. As the ending progresses, there is a feeling that the film doesn't really have much to say, but it still provides a strong prologue to Noé's career.
