Oscar and his sister Linda recently moved to Tokyo. Oscar lives off the income from small drug deals and Linda works as a stripper in a nightclub. During a police raid, Oscar is hit by a bullet. He is dying, but his spirit, also true to his promise never to leave his sister behind, refuses to leave the world of the living. As his mind wanders through the city, the visions become increasingly chaotic and turn into a veritable nightmare. The past, present and future mingle in a hallucinogenic vortex.

What a surprise, when after Irréversible and Love I was suddenly presented with a true masterpiece. Of course, the first two films also have their strong points, but due to a lot of criticism I only got 2.5 and 3 stars respectively. And then there was Enter the Void, an audiovisual spectacle that reverberated for a long time to come.

Quirky to the point of insane. That's perhaps the best way to describe Enter the Void. Sure, I just used the term audiovisual spectacle, but that applies to more movies. Gaspar Noe's style here has a lot of character, feels daring and inventive. Think of the camera work – most of the time you feel like a floating ghost watching intimate spaces – think of the constant flickering of epileptic proportions, think of the color filters Noe uses. The setting is unparalleled, and for the first time I also had the feeling that the French-Argentine filmmaker really had something to say here.

After all, Enter the Void is a compelling story of life and death, a transcendental journey that uses elements of Buddhism and Eastern philosophy to give further meaning to an early climax.

I was glued to the tube for the full two and a half hours and beyond, mainly because DTS and ambilight worked wonders together. An immersive audiovisual trip like this is not often reviewed. Craftsmanship pur sang, and it is a pity that this film will not be for everyone due to its emphasis on style elements and the perhaps airy content.

5*

Enter the void is my third Noé film. Very special director who either praises the heavens for his daring film style and directing or blows you down for his exaggerated camera shots. I belong to the first group. Great film, this Enter the void, which to me, in terms of content and visual, resembles Irréversible and Climax.

Irréversble because of his explicit and daring images in which he does not shy away from turning the camera away. Sex and drugs run through the film with very clever montages between brother and sister's past and present. And Climax because of the pumping beats and a color palette of spinning and spinning images to make yourself dizzy. The hallucinations and dream world are a beautiful spectacle.

Editing, camera handling and cinematically great. The more than 160 minutes fly by. This headstrong fragmentary approach does make the plot somewhat subordinate, but that doesn't bother here. Pure craftsmanship with some explicit images such as the abortion or penetration at the very end. The film's strongest moments are mainly in the beginning with Oscar's trip, but the floating images through the rendezvous hotel at the end were also beautiful.

One that will reverberate for a long time to come. Doubt between 4.0* and 4.5*. Beautiful!

This special trip by Noe is again not for the delicate or 'half-delicate' souls. In addition to the interesting story, he turns it into an impressive, visual and colorful spectacle that fits very well with the face and culture of (nocturnal) Tokyo.

At the end of the film Noe shocks with explicit pornographic images and an abortion that hardly appeals to the imagination. I thought this was unnecessary in the context of the film and very long. But maybe I missed the message behind this.
