A new teacher struggles with her students' behavior. She soon notices that this attitude is caused by the horrors they encounter on the street. “You can't make someone want education.”
A great film that impresses despite a number of flaws. This is first of all because of the story, but also because of Hilary Swank who plays her part with enthusiasm and pleasure. And that is also reflected in the film, which, despite the heavy subject, radiates positivity.
That is also the biggest flaw of the film. Everything goes a little too smoothly and the students who are literally fighting each other quickly form an inseparable bond. That marriage of Erin is also dragged in with the hair and could just as well have been left out. But Swank and her enthusiasm to teach problem children in alternative ways (for example by having them read Anne Frank's diary) is the heart of the film and makes an impression. A strong and inspiring story.

As far as I'm concerned, an unexpectedly good film that, although its sugary-sweet tone and message, certainly conveys a certain load and above all stays very close to the facts.
The film starts with a fairly stereotypical image, an overly green and naive teacher who sees it as a sacred task to get the problem class in line. The result is a not exactly innovative image of the umpteenth unrest at the umpteenth high school. Nevertheless, after a case involving one of the students, Miss Erin manages to start a discussion very artfully and above all to keep it going. Not only does she manage to get through after that, but the hopelessness of the young people's existence also comes to the fore. The comparison with Nazism and holocaust is made, but who are the Jews and the Nazis in this case? Who are the oppressed in this case? Partly with excursions, a visit to the cinema at Schindlers List, something that is not included in the film, various guest speakers including Miep Gies and the self-written diaries, the philosophy emerges that hate only leads to more hatred, a vicious circle. but.
"Who knows what the Holocaust is?" The answer is shocking. Just like a colleague who once reacted with dismay: 'Rotterdam bombed! When?' Or someone who asked if WW2 was in the 80s. Not to mention a dumbass who once believed the swastika was a record label. Besides the fact that it's never too late to learn, it turns out that no matter how dull you think you are, there is always something that can touch you. In this case, it appears that the students do receive a very important lesson. Because about life.
Freedom Writers opens slowly and not particularly, but once it gets going, the film offers a more than fine message, a nice interaction between students and teacher, impressive images from the Wiesenthal Memorial, and the film can be called more than solid and good.
