The Marathon

Strong Dutch film. Training for the Rotterdam Marathon is actually an excuse to tell a story about four Rotterdam friends (and Youssoef) who all have to face their own problems.

Strong characters played by some of the best Dutch actors. Stefan de Walle in particular has a starring role. The film is full of jet-black Rotterdam humor and I really appreciate that. And also when the drama presents itself, the film convinces. No sentimental bullshit, just the raw reality. Beautiful.

Excellent formula film with a Rotterdam touch. Region-specific productions often disappoint because both filmmakers and actors have little connection with the place. Just those horror accents from actors who are used to speaking in generally civilized Dutch. But 'The Marathon' (2012) is as Rotterdam as can be in how it depicts the port city in all its ugliness and glory. Such a popular atmosphere sketch of a garage where five Rotterdammers waste their time with cards, clock away cheap beer and play jokes with each other. It is not really surprising that garage owner Gerard (Stephan de Walle) does not have his finances in order and that there is even a threat of bankruptcy. And that while his gabbers do not know that he also has a terminal illness among the members. It is an absurdist impulse for these underdog heroes to participate in the Rotterdam marathon. Farcical sports preparations and attempts to find a sponsor, even a hilarious scene when the characters end up in Amsterdam. Very much enjoyed how these male goldfinch try to trump each other with their hard and coarse gallows jokes, while still laughing the big challenges in life.

That's nice, I'm absolutely not a fan of the Dutch film, and certainly not when an actor also turns out to be seriously ill, but I kept watching this film.

And certainly good acting by everyone and of course absolutely wonderful that Rotterdam swearing and cursing.
