"A country occupied, a child's innocence lost."

It is the freezing winter of 1945. The Second World War is still in full swing. There is great hunger in the west of the Netherlands, so many people move to the east to find food for their families. Fourteen-year-old Michiel lives in a village near Zwolle, who can't wait to make a difference in the resistance. This is to the annoyance of his father, who as mayor is mainly concerned with preventing escalations in the village. When Michiel unexpectedly receives an assignment, he is determined to prove that he can complete it. As a result, he becomes involved in the dangers of war.

WarWinter

Excellent Dutch war film, which is particularly impressive in terms of atmosphere and subcutaneous tension. The acting across the board is also very strong. In the winter of war, the tension slowly builds up, and certainly when the English soldier is introduced, the tension rises. The wintry landscape is a beautiful setting for this kind of story, and compliments on the cinematography are due.

Koolhoven's direction is effective and sober, with as few unnecessary subplots as possible. The focus is on the few characters that matter, and their story is the driving force of Winter of War. Who then turns out to be the ultimate traitor (easy to guess), doesn't matter so much anymore. But it does make for a strong ending.

Good Dutch penetrating war drama filmed after the famous book by Jan Terlouw. Watched with my almost 12-year-old daughter because she had chosen the book for her book review. It turned out that there were quite a few differences with the book, which made my daughter a bit disappointed. It's not clear to me why this was chosen, but it doesn't necessarily make the film better or worse. There is enough tension and drama in the film. Martijn Lackemeier plays his part with verve and the supporting roles are also played well. The sad scenes made quite an impression here. It shows the war from a different perspective than just adults. Then we looked up background information about the film together. There was not enough snow in the Netherlands during the shooting, so a large part of the winter images were shot in Lithuania. Interesting to know because I traveled there once in the spring/summer.......

Naturally referring to Jan Terlouw's bestseller. Some forget that this is a film adaptation of a children's book. So the film is also of that nature. It is only logical that occasionally some simplistic or unrealistic things are reviewed. Obviously, it is incomprehensible that no thorough investigation took place when the plane or the corpse of the soldier was found. Strange that they are not suspicious during Michiel's outings. And indeed also strange that the stagecoach was not requisitioned in the first place, but no further investigation took place after the flight…

Actually a decent movie for young adults. Much better filmed than the shameful and terrible King of Katoren. It is true that the book is often not followed. A number of things have therefore been pulled by the hair. No idea why the plot of the book was not followed anymore, because it was well put together. Nevertheless, apart from this.

Excellent role by Michiel, who experiences the war from his child's eyes. Beautiful snow landscapes too. Not a topper, not flawless, not always correct, but still a nice solid film adaptation with which you can come home.
