Brilliant, convincing film! Unexpectedly exciting, original and very well put together in terms of image. The color tone of the film is perfectly attuned to the characters and sometimes the viewer has the impression that you are looking at a surrealistic painting. Just as unexpectedly, the great Williams in his role as a photo developer sets the right, rather dark, and freaky tone. Sometimes you get an understanding and sympathy for his movements and other times you wish the 'sick' ghost under lock and key. Highly recommended, especially if you do something with photography yourself! It surprises me how underappreciated this film is by many.

I had known One Hour Photo by name for a long time, but it just didn't happen. In all honesty, the lead role of Robin Williams was also one of the reasons it took so long, somehow I always associated this movie a bit in the comedic angle, and Robin Williams in a comedic role I usually don't like very well. The man can indeed act very well, but I was always annoyed by the exaggerated fuss that floats to the surface in many of his films. mrs. Doubtfire, The Fisher King, Patch Adams, Dead Poets Society, brrrr. Fortunately, One Hour Photo went in a completely different direction.

In One Hour Photo, Robin Williams plays the lonely photo technician Sy Parrish. Without friends, without a relationship, without family, the man's entire life is his photography job. Which he also uses to give extra development to photos of all kinds of people in domestic situations, after which he imagines himself in such settings. In the film we see Parrish slowly spinning , in which he increasingly immerses himself loses his own fantasy world, and becomes obsessed with the Yorkin family that he also prying himself into. With violence of course. It's quite a nice film, and Williams convincingly plays a very lonely, slow-moving bastard. Yet; yes, Sy is creepy, but in One Hour Photo not much exciting happens in the end. The film kind of bumbles along in its plot, and still didn't really grab me. I can't really put my finger on it, and it wasn't Robin Williams' fault either - he played his part convincingly naturally. Still, the film remained somewhat flat and unsurprising. Let me just round it up, for now.

This film made me think of the film De Man met de Hond (Film, 1998) - MovieMeter.nl. That's also a film about photos and a man who uses photos to pretend he has a family. But that's a funny and absurd movie. This film is very serious and should eventually become a thriller. But I clearly prefer the funny and absurd version to the serious one. It starts out quite promising and it all looks pretty good, but at a certain point it starts to get boring. Pretty unbelievable too. And towards the end it should be kind of exciting. But it doesn't work that way for me at all. For me the film is not exciting at all and I think thriller is a very big word. And I'm also not sure whether I liked Robin Williams' acting performance in this film or not. A movie I will probably soon forget.
