The Untouchables plot

"What are you prepared to do?"

In the 1930s, the time of Prohibition, Chicago is a violent and corrupt city. Chicago is also the city of Al Capone, the legendary gangster con man. No one has yet succeeded in limiting their absolute power over organized crime. Until the Treasure Department decides to let a somewhat modest figure, Eliott Ness, do the dirty job. Ness has only one goal in mind: to succeed in his mission. But to survive in Chicago, he needs allies he can count on in all circumstances. He gets the support of Malone, an adamantly rowdy Irish police officer, who wants to teach him the hard law of Chicago. He recruits his other allies within the Treasure Department itself. Stone, a rambunctious fellow and an excellent marksman, and Wallace, a humorous but determined bookkeeper.

I expected a lot more from this. Standard crime film that does everything by the book. It's all a bit too superficially worked out for me and the characters are cardboard figures. Because of this, the whole thing never really came to life for me. Sean Connery clearly puts in the best performance and can also add some color to his character, but it remains stereotypical to the extreme. De Niro is good too, but here plays how he plays in dozens of other movies as well. Not really revolutionary material. Kevin Costner is here but a dry ass with no charisma. That doesn't do the movie any good.
The atmosphere is also fine, and there are some tough scenes in it; like the murder of Connery's character or the shoot-out at the station, but in general this remains too much on the surface. You've seen it before, and better.

Brian De Palma mixes film noir and a historical epic with the necessary western elements. It is sometimes a bit brushed off, but it remains a wonderful blockbuster with a top cast, appropriate music and some iconic scenes. A movie I grew up with.

Sean Connery received an Oscar for this, certainly not unjustly. It's a shame that it only stayed with this film, but it's also not just a saving grace. It is wonderfully theatrical with the necessary bombastic decoration. But that's part of it I must say. It is not a historically correct film, but a battle between the good and the bad, with heroes and murderers, with exciting events and the necessary drama. Wonderful cinema.

It is of course the wet dream of the conservative opinion: fighting crime for the sake of crime. De Palma shows its nonsense but also glorifies it, cinematically then. The untouchables brings it all with lightheartedness, a little wink and a flamboyant style that makes it unlike many of the heavy-duty gangster dramas of the Hollywood school. Camera work and music are perhaps the two strongest points of the film. Very nice that Morricone score here, fits great, and as far as the first is concerned, the dynamic POV shots in particular stand out. With a mention of honor for the moment the robber enters Malone's house. It could be a Hitchcock scene. The kicking moment is of course also great, actually the reason for me to see the film, but I do think that De Palma screwed up a bit by almost turning on a flashing light when referring to Eisenstein. The pram comes into view for about 5 minutes, not to mention that hideous child. Anyway, from the tasty 80's intro titles positively surprised by this Da Palma, in fact, this vehicle made my day!
