Storytelling plot

"From the director of Happiness and Welcome To The Dollhouse."

The first part of the film (dubbed 'fiction') tells of Vi, a confused college girl who becomes involved with her Pulitzer Prize-winning professor after an argument with her boyfriend. The second part (called 'non-fiction') tells the story of an unsuccessful documentary filmmaker who points his camera at the unmotivated teenager Scooby.

A little less compared to Happiness. Storytelling often sticks and doesn't really captivate. The humor, on the other hand, was here and there nice and hard and the whole family situation and the youth of those 2 parents were also portrayed ruthlessly. I also thought that indifferent Scooby was fantastic and the ending where that housewife takes revenge on the family that fired her is also quite sharp. But as said, the film unfortunately often gets stuck in endless, boring soapy parts. Anyway, quickly look up more work by Solonz.

Friendly. Will probably be the umpteenth that continues the line with Happiness, but that is not entirely illogical. There seems to be some ideas about it. The two separate stories are very separate. They have something in common with school and it is also about storytelling. But that's it. Not working at all. Pretty soon you are torn from the one story where you just know the characters a bit and you have to start all over again. That is not really desirable for a film where you have to put yourself in wry situations and people who struggle with their too small world. 2nd story is much better. The highlight are the scenes around Consuelo. Those are the funniest and the most wry as far as I'm concerned; the unique combination that Solondz can be so good at. The hypnosis scene and the ending which of course have to do with this are also excellent. The film is really worth watching, especially at times, but as a whole feels too much of unused potential to really make an impression. Above average, that is 3.5 stars.

Less sharp than Hapiness.

Just like that film, audiovisually very thin, so the plot remains. Again a few very embarrassing situations, but where it mainly made me laugh with Happiness, I found it very painful here and there. Especially that kid with the housekeeper. Of course a nice starting point, but maybe it comes too close to what I was like as a child (oh!) That documentary maker was of course also an ultimate loser, especially during the telephone conversation, but after that it didn't really work out for me either. The ending was quite cynical.

I liked the first part a bit better, what a figure that boyfriend is. And that situation at the professor's home is of course also quite unreal. Entertaining, as is the discussion afterwards.

After the film, I still feel a slight sense of disappointment, but Storytelling has now also failed to make me lose interest in more of the director's work. 2.5*.
