Floating film.

In itself the event is charming, very charming - a couple of devoted older people who wander through Paris, bickering, from one romantic place to another. Romantic with a melancholic sauce. But there is not much happening - I had some trouble keeping my attention.

Alternately poignant, funny and moving how Nick and Meg deal with each other and how their ingrained patterns cannot prevent cracks from appearing in their love. The meeting with Morgan (nice role by Jeff Goldblum) and the birthday party in his cottage form a kind of catalyst that sharpens the relationship crisis, with a somewhat unexpected ending. The many times that I was really moved ensure a fairly high score (thanks to the great acting of Lindsay Duncan and especially Jim Broadbent), but I have to say that the film sometimes reminded me of Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf: when I see married couples who can tell each other the truth so mercilessly and can fillet each other so well, I can't help but wonder why they didn't distance themselves from each other sooner. I understand how difficult it is to put an end to something that you've invested so much in and that has become such a familiar part of your life after so many years, but the fact that Nick and Meg are still together while at the same time they can hurt each other so much seems a bit theatrical (or perhaps better said script) to me – at least I hope that my wife and I will continue to treat each other with a little more respect.

Meg [Lindsay Duncan] and Nick [Jim Broadbent] are in Paris for a weekend to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. It's a moment to take stock of that marriage, which leads to confrontational conversations. The genius of Hanif Kureishi's screenplay is that the dialogues switch from bitterness to humorous self-deprecation in completely convincing ways, delivering a mix of irritation and endearment. It's an authentic-feeling analysis of a long marriage with a remarkable, poignant denouement during a dinner with Nick's college friend [Jeff Goldblum]. The cast does an excellent job in this wonderful relationship drama with a big nod to Jean-Luc Godard's Bande À Part.
