The Railway Man plot
"Revenge is never a straight line."
This is the true story of a Scottish lieutenant who was captured by the Japanese in Singapore during World War II. He was sent to a camp in Thailand where he was subjected to horrific torture and forced to help build the infamous bridge over the River Kwai. Years later, he still suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder until his second wife, Patricia Wallace, helps him come to terms with his past.

Think it's a great movie! The lieutenant has PTSD and knowing what it is will help you understand the movie better. The flashbacks, not being able to speak about it, the irritation and anger attacks, nightmares... are all PTSD symptoms. The lieutenant is not a criminal himself who wants to do the same to his enemy (the Japanese) because the love for his wife prevents him, but is busy working through his war trauma by going back to (the place of) Past. He doesn't avoid like PTSD people do, he very vigorously seeks out the hangman. He has to battle himself and his PTSD. The letter helps with that, very therapeutically. The forgiveness is not to condone the actions (of the Japanese), but to make the trauma, personal suffering (resentment, hatred, fear, anger, sadness, horror, terror) of the lieutenant more bearable. You do not forgive for others, but for yourself.

A shocking psychodrama about an engineer with unprocessed war traumas. The confrontation with his sadistic assailant from then results in a number of fierce scenes. And yes, that ending. That made me a bit quiet.
It is somewhat embarrassing to have a good feeling about a film with so many horrors, but unfortunately I don't know any better.

The loving relationship between Eric [Colin Firth] and Patti [Nicole Kidman] is strained by Eric's unpredictable, often aggressive behavior. Patti asks Eric's good friend Finlay [Stellan Skarsgârd] if this could be related to Eric's wartime past.
