Bruce Almighty plot

"In Bruce we trust?"

Bruce Nolan (Carrey) is a news reporter with ambition, but sees the rest of the world working its way up while he himself is left behind in the mediocre. After another day of setbacks, Bruce blames God for negligence for never listening to him. God apparently hears this and gives Bruce His powers under the motto: can you do it better? However, this task turns out to be quite difficult.

“BEA-utiful.”

A Jim Carrey movie, then you know what to expect. Bruce Almighty is an absurd film with a Carrey who is allowed to play god for a while. With Freeman, with his wise voice, as a real god of course. The best scene has to be the one between Carrey and Carell, who show that they have mastered the better crazy cymbal work. Aniston has a somewhat thankless role as a friend of Carrey who is of course not happy with her lazy and then arrogant boyfriend. Bruce Almighty is most fun when Carrey can just play god.

Typical Carrey.

I'm not a fan of Carrey, but I'm certainly not a hater either. I like him best. Even though there were a few typical Carrey scenes in here (Crazy faces, screaming) I didn't think it was all that funny.

The idea was very nicely done, and I also really liked Carrell as Evan. The cast was okay, Carrey is Carrey, the rest is the rest. But also haven't laughed that much for a movie that's actually so popular. Found it all a bit exaggerated in the end.

Great looker, but if you don't like Carrey, I definitely don't recommend him.

Saw it once with fellow students in the cinema, after first seeing the trailer which I thought was quite funny. In the cinema it turned out that everything that is funny had actually been put in that trailer, which was quite a disappointment. Last year I also saw the successor Evan Almighty, so it was time to give this one another chance after more than fifteen years.

That was not easy, because my sense of humor has apparently also changed a bit in those fifteen years. It's all very bland and predictable, especially the moral lessons disturbing. Of course the main character is a self-centered jerk, and of course he eventually finds out that this isn't the best attitude and that he can't blame God for everything. Can I just throw up? Furthermore, I think such a film about God can only be made in the US, where so many people seem unable to imagine that there are people for whom religion is less obvious.

Bright spots were really only Steve Carrell and to a lesser extent Morgan Freeman. For me, this film was the first introduction to the former, and since his character wasn't the biggest joker in the film, I was surprised at the time about his role in The Office, but actually he shows all his talent in the scene where he is sabotaged by the main character. It's only a brief moment and it can't save the movie either. Ultimately, Bruce Almighty is also worse than Evan Almighty, who was less moralizing as far as I can remember. 0.5*.
