Stupid continuation.

A few months ago I decided to watch the most expensive movies of all time. 1 of those films was Shrek the Third according to Wikipedia. Part 1 was still quite ok, but because I hadn't seen part 2 yet, I recorded it from the BBC to watch.

At the time, I thought Shrek was still quite an entertaining film with hideous animation. This part partially continues that. Especially in the area of hideously ugly animation. Although the landscapes are indeed nicely animated and the Far Far Away looks fun, it is still striking how ugly the characters have come to life.

I also forgot that a number of characters are voiced by well-known comedians. But it just doesn't seem to work. I do enjoy Murphy movies from time to time, as long as he holds back a little bit. Here, however, he goes wild and that results in irritating and tiring humor.

Myers also makes little impression as Shrek. Can really appreciate him as an actor, although I have yet to see the Austin Powers movies. In any case, as a voice actor, he adds nothing. Diaz isn't particularly memorable either. Then only found Banderas funny as the Puss in Boots at times.

I forgot that Shrek is actually a parody of all fairy tales. At times that turns out to be pretty fun, but a lot of jokes completely miss the point. Often the jokes are just not that much fun, and Murphy takes up a lot of space, which is usually not very well used.

For the rest, it's a pretty stupid story with little impact. Nowhere is it a bit special. It's not hilarious at all, and it's entertaining to a degree, but not exactly either. Often thought it was an ugly animated film that let a lot of potential go up in smoke.

“Oh, Shrek. Don't worry. Things just seem bad because it's dark and rainy and Fiona's father hired a sleazy hitman to whack you.”

Great second Shrek adventure. Newcomer Puss In Boots steals the show, but Donkey and all the supporting characters also have some fantastic moments. Shrek and Princess Fiona are the main protagonists, but they are a bit overshadowed by all the other characters. Not bad at all, because it just goes to show how versatile and strong this franchise is. And Eddy Murphy and Antonio Banderas are also excellent voice actors.
