Shrek the Third plot

"He's in for the royal treatment."

Shrek (Myers) and Fiona (Diaz) are acting king and queen. They don't like it, so Shrek joins Donkey (Murphy) and Puss In Boots (Banderas) in search of the true heir apparent. That turns out to be a cousin of Queen Lillian, Artie, who is at boarding school and has absolutely no interest in the kingship. While Shrek is gone, Prince Charming stages a coup to take over Far Far Away.

After the very bad first quarter of an hour, the film gets pretty fun. You sometimes see jokes coming from miles away and are actually very bad, but delivered with such conviction that it becomes quite fun. Never the hard laugh, but a constant smile. Other than that, nothing special and especially Donkey and Puss get much less to do. The latter is a shame because the films have to rely on minor characters, Shrek herself is quite colorless. But in the end, this film is sometimes about nothing, but it is nicely over the top in terms of content, and that makes it enjoyable. 3.0*.

For me personally the least part of the four. This will undoubtedly also have to do with the annoying and highly uninteresting character of Prince Charming. Although I thought his first stage performance with the horse stick was quite funny.

Most importantly, I found the plot elaboration rather poor. Simple and easy to put together. The turnaround in the end followed the same line with a sloppy and cheap solution. As if they just didn't care anymore. And Artie's character was also so bland and unimaginative. Somehow the jokes were also less funny for me. I also thought Merlin was bland and unnecessary. Maybe also because Donkey's role was a little less prominent that it could interest me less?

Not that I want to cut the movie completely. That's why there are too many little fun tidbits that keep it always entertaining. But he lacks some sharpness. This third film is the forerunner of the fourth film where the feelings of being Oger arise with Shrek. He doesn't want to be king and in the fourth part this goes even further. Nice to have seen, but a little more salt and pepper that is typical of the Shrek films was allowed.
