The leader of a pack of pirates, the Deacon (Hopper) attacks one of those towns to capture a little girl, who appears to have a map to the mythical 'Dry Land' tattooed on her back. With the help of a mysterious mutant (Costner), the girl escapes with her foster mother, but the Deacon doesn't give up so easily.

I had never seen this Waterworld. Childhood sentiment for one person, a guilty pleasure for another. So neither for me, because in 1995 I still shit my diaper full. Actually I'm secretly a bit of a fan of Kevin Costner, but often plays in nice movies. Adventurous and action-packed. It is somewhat reminiscent of Mad Max although the film is set at sea. Dennis Hopper is a nice badguy (as usual) and doesn't have to put in much effort. Jeanne Tripplehorn looked very voluptuous and her legs come out very nicely in this movie. The child itself is not immediately annoying for a change and does a good job on its own. Nowhere does she feel forced and she certainly colors her role.

Central to the film is the Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker led by Joe Hazelwood that pushed millions of gallons of crude oil into the sea. This happened on March 24, 1989. Apparently I am a good week early for the film so to "honor". Always nice to assign a certain date to a film. Now, almost 30 years later, the disaster still appears to have an effect on, among other things, the fish population. This environmental disaster remained the largest until the problems of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform that blackened the Gulf of Mexico as of April 20, 2010.

All in all, a pretty fun movie, personally I think it's better than Mad Max (although I've yet to see the new one). Actually, I was hardly bored and that is not so easy for a film of this length and on an often dull, monotonous sea. A film that does justice to the necessary clichés, but still developed a great worldbuilding in a good 2 hours.

Watched it for the first time last week, and because of the big 'flop' story surrounding this film, I was curious how I would experience it. I was happy with this movie 100%, just a good sci-fi movie.

I find the whole setting in which the world is under water interesting, a visually strong doomsday scenario. I like these worlds, it always produces beautiful images. People look for ways to survive in Waterworld, willingly or unwillingly, and in the meantime evolution does not stand still, as Costner's character testifies. Beautiful images, beautiful sets, impressive vehicles, fine action, lots of humor and an antihero who fortunately does not continuously play the stereotypical Hollywood hero.

I don't understand why this movie flopped. I kept thinking about Mad Max while I was watching, and those movies are still well appreciated. Perhaps the carefree 90s were not the best period for such a doomsday scenario. Or maybe Waterworld was just the right movie, but made in the wrong time. Who will say. Anyway, I had a good time!

4*

Revised, in the longer Ulysses Cut, clocking in at nearly three hours. Many nice details and plot lines have been restored in this version, which, although of course a lot longer, never gets dull or boring. On Blu-ray, the film looks very good, except for some ugly CGI shots, which sporadically ruin things a bit. Everything with the balloon and the oil tanker, for example, doesn't look good. Furthermore, this 'Mad Max on water' can still be enjoyed, with beautiful sets and decors and, of course, as the undisputed highlight the great-looking trimaran of lead actor Kevin Costner.
