Drømmen plot

The 13-year-old Frits does not go down well with the director of the provincial school. It's 1969, the world is changing rapidly and corporal punishment in schools has been banned. However, the headmaster does not care about this new ban. Frits spends his summer holidays on the first television his family has bought, and is influenced by the new wind that is currently blowing. Martin Luther King's speeches incite him to rebel against society. When the headmaster goes too far in his punishments, the boy starts a personal battle against the authorities.

The biggest assholes are those who hide their misdeeds behind institutions and positions of power. School principal Lindum-Svendsen is such a person. In Scandinavian countries, education is a foundation of society and has a function almost on par with the church. So important, too, that lies are allowed to highlight Denmark's virtues ( beautifully illustrated in that history lesson on slavery ). It is therefore "not done" to question and attack that as Fritse's parents do. They walk with their noses right against a wall.

While corporal punishment was already prohibited by law, the principal allows himself to abuse children at his school. He almost rips off an ear from Fritse, a boy who really can't be faulted, and who becomes the victim of a lame joke . He is protected by a more progressive teacher, Freddy Svale, who is the complete opposite of the old-fashioned, almost militaristic principal.

I thought it was a compelling, accessible and very critical film about how far the power of the education system can and may go, with good music, correct acting, which could have been a little more emotional for me. Although, I was still touched by that beautiful father-son bond. Also here and there some small misses (a not too good ending) that fortunately do not bring the film down. Parallels are also drawn between the abolition of slavery and corporal punishment. Drommen is easy to watch and should appeal to a very wide audience

Today, August 28, is Martin Luther King, I have a dream day. Reason for me to put on this much-awarded and fact-based film by Niels Arden Oplev again, because the main character in his drive for justice was mainly inspired by MLK, a man who inspired me in my younger years and still today. not left untouched.

I've now seen this movie for the fourth time or so and it seems to get more and more compelling. Contrary to what @Leo1954 claims above, the boy is not opposed to society, but to a tyrannical, heartless, manipulative and unscrupulous headmaster, whose educational skills seem to date back to the Middle Ages. The fact that Frits' classmates finally decide to form one front against so much lying and injustice gives me goosebumps every time. Good luck.

In short, a beautiful film by director Arden Oplev, of whom I have seen three films to date. All three of them score the maximum rating of 5* for me.

Anyone who likes this film should definitely consider the even stronger Der Kommer en Dag (Film, 2016). Similar theme, also Danish, same setting, but set in a boarding school. A bit rougher than this.

Not that I would just consider this film as a 'family film'. It's not all that airy. It does make clear, together with the other film I quoted, how institutionalized child abuse was in the scholastic 1960s in Denmark and perhaps also in other countries to a greater or lesser extent. Today you can hardly imagine it. It is actually striking how the community on the one hand tolerates it, but on the other hand is also powerless because of the events. Not once, not twice, but for 25 years. And I find the latter very bitter from my seat and context in 2023. Where was that school nurse all those other times? To pick just one.

Also an entertaining movie. Nice that subplot with Martin Luther King. It's nice to see that it really has inspired a lot of people. A pity indeed of that teacher who capitulated after all. Maja, that will be soon, I suppose. Only I would have liked to know more why exactly he turned his cart.
