Rewatched Friday night after not seeing it in a long time. Of course on blu ray and strangely enough still not 4K. The extended version is also not available in the Netherlands. Now I have to say that the picture is also still fine. Only in a little less. The landscapes are fantastically beautiful. Sound is a bit thin. Playing time of almost 3 hours is actually more than enough!

And yes, the film holds up very well. The run-up to the Sioux does indeed take a bit of time, but Danst met de Wolven never gets bored. Strangely enough, I thought the ending was quickly rushed. As if there was still a lot waiting 10 minutes before the end, but this is a bit of a dead end. Another point of criticism is that at a very young age you do not yet master a rich English language to take your entire age with you as an Indian. Anyway, those small criticisms that you feel forgive this absolutely beautiful blockbuster!

Movie 4.0

Image 4.0

Sound 3.5

Extras none!

I let all those years pass me by because of its sheer length, and now that I've finally seen it it was through the Director's Cut of 224 minutes, but I wasn't bored for a second. Yes, the movie was long, but there's really not a single scene that I thought could have been done. Excellent playing by Graham Greene in particular, avoiding a lot of clichés (no cruelty, no initiation rituals, nuanced marital relations, humor within the tribe, children having the usual children's bickering), beautiful shots (but that's not even that difficult with such beautiful untouched nature), and no imposed happy ending. The only downside I think is the music, often excessive and very controlling, but given the popularity of John Barry's score I am the only one who believes that. All in all, an impressive experience.

It's a shame that Dances with Wolves isn't in the imdb top 250. It is a fantastic adventure about a man who wants to discover new adventures. It is an ode to solitude, learning a new language and making friendships.

The cinematography, with wide-shots of the landscape, is one of the most beautiful, combined with beautiful scenes, including with the wolf: Two Socks. Had the movie been made today, it was CGI. The wolf was played by two Wolves. One called Buck the other Teddy. Very clever of Kostner who was completely new to directing and producing and then also acting. He did all his riding himself, including the scene where he shot a buffalo without holding the horse.

The film is carefully constructed and we occasionally get to hear Kostner's narrator. A great idea for letting the viewer know what he's feeling in his journey.

The bond he builds with the Siouxis is really wonderful. No forced fast band, time is just taken how they; The Sioux and Kostner come closer and build a wonderful friendship. John Barry's music score is one of the most beautiful. And it makes the movie special.

With seven well-deserved Oscars, Dances with Wolves is an unforgettable film that every movie lover must see! And how nice to know that there is an extended cut
