Stylish!

The camerawork is a feast for the eyes. And that To in this action film mainly limits itself to suggestive action, without many wild chases and shootouts, I find no problem at all. The music is nice, just like some typical, bizarre To elements in this film, e.g. that kid who rides around on a bike on the street late at night.

Unfortunately, the film does have one major shortcoming. A specific shortcoming that I often struggle with with To. He portrays his characters/story in a much too confusing way. I can hardly distinguish between the characters and then, to top it all off, they keep talking about each other's nicknames. I sometimes couldn't see the forest for the trees. A 3.5*

Brilliant crime film. Stripped of tension and sensation, but with another trump card in hand. A funny and surprising set-up in the restaurant after which the parties involved in a loosely fluttering plot meander past each other in the veins of Hong Kong. Simon Yam is once again blessed with a formidable appearance.

Suet Lam is even a bull's eye as a schlemiel who is the unlucky one for almost the entire film. Not that To is so interested in tinkering with characters and telling a story in detail. He mainly wants to show something. And he does that with no rush and in an exceptionally atmospheric and stylish way.

City and cast are captured stately and gracefully under the lens and the strikingly deserted streets look stunning in the night light. The music starts off a bit shaky, but eventually fits quite nicely into To's semi-mad universe and the cages are such an absurd, eye-catching little thing that gives it some extra cachet.

In that respect, the boy on the bike is even a direct hit. In the meantime, of course, it is heading towards an apotheosis where To once again indulges in what can be called his specialty. All in all, beautiful filmmaking of the purest kind and how it turns out with the lost weapon is also damn funny.

Usually I like To me's crime films; here is another fine example of clever lighting in a Hong Kong night. Beautifully and precisely framed often. A cop loses his service weapon after being overpowered by gang members and the son of a mafia boss is murdered in a snack bar, which triggers a whole series of events in the same neighborhood. Then all these separate events come together in a finale in true western style.

However, the director does not manage to put much flexibility into the story, which becomes frustrating after a while. The actors keep walking around and the thin story evolves too slowly and too cramped towards the climax. After a strong start, the film falls a bit quiet; a twist or an action scene in between would have been more than welcome for some variation. A lesser To for me but visually this was class. 3* (= reasonably good but does not stand out)
