Indiana Jones is and remains one of my favorite movie characters. I have enjoyed watching the old trilogy countless times and since the mid 90s I have been eagerly looking forward to a fourth part. During the long wait, I satisfied my hunger by reading several Indiana Jones books, as well as watching the boring TV series Young Indiana Jones. In the meantime, some fascinating Indiana Jones clones appeared (including The Mummy), but in 2008, after a long wait, the time had finally come: the fourth Indiana Jones film finally appeared in theaters.

Together with 3 friends (all three of whom were Indiana Jones fans too) I went to see the film in the cinema and when we came out after 2.5 hours, I must confess that neither of us were really impressed with the film that we had just seen. I never felt the charm of the original trilogy anywhere and I was annoyed by the many CGI effects that ruined many action scenes. As examples I cite the scene in which Shia Labeouf winds through the jungle like a kind of Tarzan via vines, or the now often mocked scene with the refrigerator. I also found the ending of the film very disappointing.

It all looked impressive on paper: Ford returned as Indiana Jones, as did Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood (indy's cutest love interest, anyway). Supporting roles include veterans such as John Hurt and Jim Broadbent, and one of my favorite actors (Ray Winstone) also stars in this film.

Where did it go wrong: perhaps because the film is way too exaggerated. The stunts are unbelievable, Cate Blanchett also acts quite over-the-top and would have been better suited in an episode of Allo Allo. Actually, this whole movie is a bit over-the-top.

The previous Indiana Jones films certainly didn't take it too closely with credibility (particularly parts 2 and 3), but this fourth part went a bit too far in my opinion.

Underrated movie, which is just fun. In terms of unbelievability, the other films in the series are no better. The fridge scene can compete with piggybacking on a submerged submarine from the outside for hundreds of nautical miles, which is done casually in Raiders. Furthermore, an ancient alien artifact is no stranger than the supernatural phenomena in the other films.

In terms of speed and humor, the level is also equal. Furthermore, although the more modern visual effects are made more with the computer, they are well executed, with a lot of detail. That there is never a real threat... yes that also applies to the other films, but the fun makes up for it here too. It's never so much a question of whether Indy will survive, but what kind of crazy, predicament he will end up in next. Blanchett is extra tasty as a cool Slavic officer and LeBoeuf fits just fine. Reuniting with Marion is also a golden opportunity.

I don't think the problem with Indy 4 is that it's much worse than the other Indy movies, the problem is that everyone who grew up with it has gotten a lot older, more spoiled and has seen it all before. The homage to cheerful 1940s serials fitted perfectly around 1980, thus ending a cynical period in cinema, with Star Wars and Raiders, but that formula has now become worn out.
