One of the questions on the mind of Indiana Jones fans ahead of the release of The Dial of Destiny involved the fate of Indy's son, Mutt.
In Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Mutt is introduced as an ally of Indiana before it is eventually revealed that he is, in fact, the son of the famous archaeologist and Marion Ravenwood.
Crystal Skull didn't receive positive reviews from critics, and unfortunately for Shia LaBeouf, who played Mutt, part of the criticism was sent his way for his performance in the movie.
James Mangold, who directed Dial of Destiny, has explained why Mutt doesn't feature in his movie.
"It's separate from all past studio, political intrigue on movies I didn't make," he told Variety.
"You were either going to make a movie all about the two of them (meaning Indiana and Mutt) or you're going to have to find a way to not have (Mutt) around, because he was too significant a player in the previous film to just pretend he didn't exist.
"I didn't think his whole thing worked that well in the previous film. I just went towards something else because it was what was more interesting to me."
Without mentioning spoilers, Mutt's absence is indeed explained midway through Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
LaBeouf didn't enjoy his Indiana Jones experience
Years after Crystal Skull was released, LaBeouf looked back on his experience, and it is safe to say he did not enjoy working with Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four Indy movies.
“You get there, and you realize you’re not meeting the Spielberg you dream of,” LaBeouf told Variety.
“You’re meeting a different Spielberg, who is in a different stage in his career. He’s less a director than he is a f—ing company.
“Spielberg’s sets are very different Everything has been so meticulously planned. You got to get this line out in 37 seconds. You do that for five years, you start to feel like not knowing what you’re doing for a living.”
