Harrison Ford is one of the most iconic actors of all time and now is making a name for himself in the animal kingdom.

Even though Ford's most famous character, Indiana Jones, is deathly afraid of snakes, Conservation International has poked fun at this fact by naming a new species of snake after the actor himself.

"A new species of snake, discovered high in the Andes mountains in Peru, has been named for environmental advocate and vice chair of Conservation International, Harrison Ford," a statement from the organisation read.

"The species (Tachymenoides harrisonfordi) is a type of Slender Snake measuring 16 inches long. Researchers from Peru and the U.S. discovered the animal – one male snake – in May 2022, sun-basking in a swamp within the Otishi National Park area in Peru’s Andes. Its habitat is located more than two miles in elevation (10,656 feet) in the park’s mountain grasslands, known as the Central Andean Puna."

For reacted to the news with a bit of his legendary wit.

“These scientists keep naming critters after me, but it’s always the ones that terrify children. I don’t understand. I spend my free time cross-stitching. I sing lullabies to my basil plants, so they won’t fear the night,” he said.

“In all seriousness, this discovery is humbling. It’s a reminder that there’s still so much to learn about our wild world — and that humans are one small part of an impossibly vast biosphere. On this planet, all fates are intertwined, and right now, one million species are teetering on the edge of oblivion. We have an existential mandate to mend our broken relationship with nature and protect the places that sustain life.”

Harrison Ford thanks Tom Selleck for Indy role

After Raiders of the Lost Ark had been written, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas started the casting process, with a number of well-known actors considered.

Spielberg and Lucas were both keen to cast an unknown actor at that time as they wanted to establish a new star who would commit to a trilogy of Indiana Jones movies.

Tom Selleck emerged as the first choice for the role, but unfortunately for him, he had already filmed the pilot for television series Magnum P.I. If that show was picked up by the network, which it subsequently was, then the actor would not be able to fit Raiders into his schedule.

To add insult to injury for Selleck, the 1980 Actor's Strike meant that he had three months off and actually could have played Indy if Ford hadn't already been cast. Lucas was initially hesitant to cast Ford as he didn't want to rely on the actor again so quickly after working on Star Wars.

Ford went on to star in Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom, The Last Crusade, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Dial of Destiny, the last of which was released in July of 2023.

While promoting the new movie, Ford took the time to thank Selleck for giving him one of his most famous roles.

“Tom Selleck had the job, but he also incurred an obligation to do a television series and he was unable to get out of that contract,” Ford told Deadline.

“I became the second choice, and I’m very grateful for Tom. Thank you, Tom, man. If you’re listening, thank you again.”

Selleck himself has been asked about the story many times and it seems like the actor has no regrets as he went on to enjoy success with Magnum P.I.
